After doing a little research online through ALA.org, I’m 99.9% sure I’ve found the University and MLS program I want to pursue… I’ve gone through their website, looked through their admissions requirements, and requested an information packet about the graduate degree program I’m interested in. I have a few questions remaining, which is to be expected…
- How many of their classes can be taken online or through distance learning because I don’t know how well commuting will work for me (the University I’m interested in is 2 hours away)…
- Not to mention I’ve never taken a strictly online class or have done distance learning before… so that would definitely be a learning experience in self-discipline.
- I’m a little nervous about paying for classes… I already have about $27,000 in student loans which I start paying either this June or next year May (I’m waiting to hear back about my application for deferment since my consolidation went through), and I’m scared that I won’t be able to get financial aide or scholarship, and I don’t really have any room in my budget for paying tuition… But the earliest I would submit an application would be this time next year, so maybe the financial situation will resolve itself by then…
The program I’m interested in is 36 credits consisting of 6 core (required) classes and 6 “electives;” but what draws me to this particular university’s program as opposed to others is that not only is it an ALA accredited program, but they offer various “areas of interests” programs to help tailor your choice in electives. My area of interest that I have decided to pursue (that I could not find with other “nearby” universities) is Public Library Services to Children and Young Adults.
I can’t wait for my two weeks to be done: I start my new library job on Friday, June 8th. HOORAY!
