For the life of me I couldn’t figure out how to get this to post properly, so you’ll have to “travel” to appreciate this week’s selection. Totally more than worth it.
Without further ado, here’s “AL’s Been Everywhere, Man” in celebration of the first 100 years of American Libraries.
Today was the first day on my own as the new Children’s Librarian, and to kick it off, I had 2 Story Time programs… which I was rather nervous about. The previous librarian helped me piece it together using her format. I did a little practice reading over the weekend so my annunciation and speed would be good…
At the last minute I decided to cut out the Kitty Cat puppet and rhyme… it’s not that I’m not comfortable with puppets, but I couldn’t figure out a way to transition smoothly to our story. It turned out to be a good call because if I had kept it, we would have gone over our time. I was also glad I decided to do only one craft (the simpler one) again, because of time. My first two story times turned out to be a good success, well timed, and with happy kids and happy parents (huzzah!)
I set up for Story Time in advance before people arrived, and when I stepped back to look at my work, I was dismayed at how dismal, bare-bones, and uninviting it all was. I’m definitely going to have to do something about this. I’m thinking signs… one on the stairwell door to lead people down; a fantastic story-book mural painted on the wall as you go down the steps… and I am going to bring from home my big purple throw to put on the floor, and I would like to ask about getting an allowance to go to the JCPenny homestore to buy lots of fun pillows to put on the floor (since they’re having a huge closing clearance sale). I’d also like to take the stuffed animals from on top of the shelves (have them washed!) and bring them downstairs so kids can cuddle with them and be comfy while enjoying story time.
Ideas are no problem… it’s the doing. But I am new, idealistic, and determined! (And I have lots of pictures to take!)
Happy Monday!
At Story Time next week, I am SO bringing cookies!
I like having free-time in the evenings, so now I get up at 7am to have time for my workout, and enough time to return home for a quick shower and change of clothes before heading off to work in time for 10.
Here’s to fit librarians!
